Lifestyle Product Pictures for Kids’ Montessori Inspired Toys in Sterling, Virginia

In April 2023, I officially added commercial photography to the services I offer. It felt like a natural extension of the work I had already been doing with families, just focused on helping small business owners present their products with the same thoughtfulness that TBP is known for. Since then, I have been serving brands that care deeply about what they create and how it is seen. Blueberry & Third was one of the very first to trust me in that new season.

This toy lifestyle product photography session in Sterling, VA was built around intention from the beginning. Blueberry & Third did not start as a large manufacturer. It began with Nikki and Brian building a climbing arch for their daughter’s first birthday. They wanted something she could grow into. Something safe. Something that would sit beautifully in their living space instead of feeling like clutter. When friends saw what they built and realized it was handcrafted from scratch, that encouragement sparked something bigger. They built a workshop. They expanded their designs. And slowly, a Montessori-inspired toy and furniture brand took shape.

There is a detail about them that I love because it says everything about how personal this business is. The meaning behind their name. Blueberry comes from the first drink Nikki and Brian shared on their first date. Third is the street where their family began and where many of their first wooden designs were created. It is not a manufactured brand name. It is layered with memory. And when a brand carries that kind of story, the photography cannot feel generic.

As Montessori parents, their designs reflect independence, exploration, and child-led learning. The American Montessori Society describes Montessori education as hands-on learning within thoughtfully prepared environments. That philosophy shaped not only their product design, but also how we approached the imagery.

Instead of isolating each toy in a studio, we photographed inside real homes in Sterling, Virginia. Our first product photoshoot together happened in August of last year. We worked in two different homes and collaborated with three sets of child models. Natural light filtered through windows. Bookshelves were placed where a toddler could actually reach. The clothing rack stood in a bedroom, not against a seamless backdrop. This was not about perfect catalog photos. It was about creating lifestyle product pictures that felt lived in.

In the first location, inside a light-filled home in Sterling, Virginia, siblings naturally moved between The Balance Beam, The Climbing Arch, The Bookshelf, and The Play Tray. We showed one way to use the play tray as a floor table for toys typically played with on the ground. We demonstrated how easily a child could pull a book from the shelf independently. But mostly, we let them play. Mom joined in. The energy was light and unforced. By the time we packed up, the kids were hugging me goodbye.

At the second home, also here in Sterling, we photographed inside both a bedroom and a playroom to show how these Montessori-inspired pieces live in different spaces. In the bedroom, we styled The Clothing Rack, The Bookshelf, The Play Tray, The Rocketship Activity Board, and The Rainbow Activity Board. The play tray became an activity station with the boards placed on top. The clothing rack held “fancy” outfits that our five-year-old model eagerly tried on.

When two of his friends arrived, we moved into the playroom and re-styled the climbing arch, balance beam, and rack with costumes. The boys dressed up, experimented with the arch in imaginative ways, and even turned it into part of a peek-a-boo game. When they needed to slow down, they naturally gathered on the floor to read.

That rhythm matters in toy lifestyle product photography, especially when you are photographing in real homes in Sterling, VA rather than a studio. Children do not interact with objects in one static way. They test them. They reinterpret them. They return to them. Capturing that movement creates credibility.

We were also intentional about showing versatility throughout the product photoshoot. The same play tray functioned differently depending on the room. The clothing rack held everyday outfits in one image and costumes in another. Demonstrating multiple uses within one product photography session quietly communicates value without over-explaining.

For Montessori-inspired brands especially, environment is part of the message. Montessori spaces are simple, accessible, and intentionally arranged. The Montessori Foundation speaks about how prepared environments support independence and confidence in children. When lifestyle product photos reflect that same environment, the visual story becomes consistent.

In a saturated market, standing out rarely comes from being louder. It comes from being clear. Clear about how the product fits into everyday life. Clear about the type of home it belongs in. Clear about the experience it creates.

I was sore for days after that session; and I’m not surprised because of all the crawling I did, constantly changing angles, and following the kids around the entire morning. But I would honestly do it again without hesitation.

Because when product photos mirror the care behind the design itself, it’s no longer just something that fills space on a website. It becomes part of the brand’s foundation.

That’s what intentional lifestyle product photography does. It bridges the gap between seeing and owning; helping customers imagine the product in their space before it ever ships.
