A Different Kind Of Photo Session (And Why It Matters)
Most of us book a photoshoot when we need them.
Family photos for the holiday card.
Milestone photos when the baby turns one.
A quick spring mini because it’s been too long and you can’t remember the last time you were all in a photo together.
But there’s another kind of photo that gets overlooked… even by the most intentional moms.
A photo that isn’t about the whole family.
It’s about them.
Not “your child as part of the family.”
Not “your child smiling because we asked.”
But your child as their own person right now; in this specific stage of childhood. Their personality in pictures.
That’s what personality portraits are.
What Are Personality Portraits?

These are short, intentional sessions designed to capture who your child is; beyond the “say cheese” smile.
Their expressions.
Their little mannerisms.
The way they tilt their head when they’re curious.
The way they go serious when they’re thinking.
The way they light up when they feel seen.
These portraits aren’t about perfection.
They’re about documenting childhood in a way that feels real… because childhood is real. It’s playful and tender and sometimes a little wild; and it changes faster than we, as parents, are ready for.
Why Do These Portraits Feel So Different?
Here’s the belief behind these sessions: Each child should be free to show up as who they are. Their own person. Fully themselves.
Because in real life…
Some kids naturally take up space.
Some kids quietly step back.
Some kids get labeled too quickly.
And without meaning to, we start seeing them through the roles they play:
- The middle child who rarely gets their time to shine because you’re always managing everyone at once.
- The shy one who fades behind siblings and needs more time than a fast-paced session allows.
- The loud one who is always being told to calm down… even though their energy is part of what makes them them.
- The quiet thinker who is misunderstood because their world is happening on the inside.
This is not “cute portraits.”
This is: I see you.
And when kids feel seen, everything changes.
Their shoulders drop.
Their expression softens.
They stop performing.
That’s when the magic shows up.
What If We Already Do Family Photos?

I hear this all the time. And yes; family photos matter so much. They’re the anchor. They’re the story of “us.” But these are different.
Family photos capture connection.
Personality portraits capture identity.
They document the parts of childhood that disappear quietly:
- the missing tooth grin
- the phase where they only wear that one outfit
- the dramatic, hilarious expressions
- the little confidence that’s growing
- the way they hold their hands, or wrinkle their nose, or smirk when they’re proud of themselves
The truth is… kids don’t stay the same for long.
You can feel it as a mom.
Sometimes it hits out of nowhere.
And suddenly you realize:
They’re not just growing taller. They’re becoming someone new.
These pictures help you hold onto the version of them you don’t want to forget.
Who Are Personality Photos Perfect For?
These sessions are especially loved by families who…
- Want at least one child to have photos that are just theirs
- Have a shy child who does better without an audience
- Have a child who doesn’t love traditional posing
- Want something meaningful that doesn’t require planning a full family session
- Want to document childhood in a way that feels honest and true
They’re also perfect if you’ve ever thought: “I have plenty of photos of my kids… but I don’t have photos that really feel like them.”
What Does This Session Look Like?

It’s calm.
It’s simple.
It’s intentionally designed to for kids to feel safe to be themselves.
I’ll guide them gently, but I won’t force anything.
Some kids walk in and immediately perform; some take a few minutes to warm up. Both are welcome here.
And because it’s one-on-one, your child doesn’t have to compete for attention or get pulled into sibling dynamics. They can just… be.
The goal is not to manage them. The goal is to meet them where they are; and capture who they are in that exact season of childhood.
How Long Are These Sessions?
Personality portraits are intentionally short; typically around 10–15 minutes per child. That might sound quick, but it’s actually the sweet spot.
Kids don’t need an hour to show who they are. In fact, the magic usually happens in the first few minutes; when they’re curious, expressive, and fully themselves.
It’s intentionally designed to for kids to feel safe to be themselves. I’ll guide them gently, but I won’t force anything.

And because it’s one-on-one, we’re able to move at your child’s pace. Your child doesn’t have to compete for attention or get pulled into sibling dynamics. They can just… be.
Short, focused, and intentional. That’s where personality portraits shine.
Where Are Northern VA Personality Portraits Done?
While we serve all families within Northern Virginia, these sessions are photographed in my Gainesville, VA studio. The studio space is calm, neutral, and intentionally simple. There are no busy backdrops or distracting props competing for attention; because the focus is your child.
A clean environment allows expressions, body language, and personality to take center stage. It also helps shy children feel less overstimulated and energetic children feel free to move without too many distractions.
The simplicity is intentional.
Why Are These Sessions Designed for One Child?

Personality Portraits are designed for one child per session. Not because siblings aren’t welcome (I love siblings). But because the entire point of this experience is giving one child space.
When we add siblings, the energy changes instantly:
- The loud one gets louder.
- The shy one gets quieter.
- The middle child disappears.
- Someone starts performing; someone shuts down.
One child = a different kind of portrait.
It’s slower.
It’s more intentional.
It lets your child be fully seen.
If you’d like to photograph multiple children, we can absolutely do that; each child simply needs their own time slot. (And yes, we offer a sibling discount for families booking more than one spot.)
Their Personality In Pictures Become More Meaningful Over Time
Right now, you’ll see a photo and think: “That is so them.”
But, later you’ll see the same image and realize:
“Oh my gosh… I forgot they used to make that face.”
“Remember when they were obsessed with dinosaurs?”
“Do you remember when…?”
That’s the kind of memory that hits you in the chest in the best way.
Because photos aren’t just pictures. They’re proof.
Proof of who they were in this fleeting stage of childhood.
Frequently Asked Questions

Are personality portraits only for little kids?
Not at all. They work beautifully for toddlers, big kids, and even teens. Every age has a version worth remembering.
What if my child is shy or doesn’t warm up quickly?
That’s more common than you think; and it’s exactly why these are one-on-one. We’ll move gently. No pressure. No forcing. Kids usually come around when they feel safe.
Can siblings be included?
Personality Portraits are for one child per session by design. If you’d like portraits for multiple children, each child needs their own spot; sibling discounts are available.
Will you pose them?
I’ll guide them; but I won’t over-pose them. These sessions are about expressions, natural movement, and capturing what feels real.
What’s the difference between your Northern VA Personality Portraits and your seasonal minis?
Seasonal minis are usually designed to capture a quick update for the whole family. Personality Portraits are designed to capture identity… your child’s unique spirit and presence, in a way that feels personal.
