There’s something really tender about those first few weeks with a newborn.

You’re tired; you’re figuring everything out day by day; you’re trying to remember the last time you ate something warm. And now you’re preparing for photos on top of it all.

So if we were sitting together, probably with a lukewarm coffee between us, here’s what I’d tell you before your newborn  photoshoot. The real things. The helpful things. The things that make this whole experience feel a little lighter.

Because the truth is, you don’t need everything to be perfect. You don’t need a spotless house, a baby who sleeps on cue, or a carefully thought-out plan. Those first few weeks are beautifully messy, and that’s exactly what makes them worth remembering.

All you need to do is show up as you are, love on your baby, and let the moments unfold naturally. We’ll take care of the rest.

You don’t need to have it all together

If we walk into your home and you’re a little tired, a little unsure of how the morning went, or still in the middle of feeIf we walk into your home and you’re a little tired, a little unsure of how the morning has gone, or still in the middle of feeding your baby, that’s completely normal. Those early days with a newborn are beautiful, emotional, and sometimes a little chaotic. We expect that, and honestly, it’s part of what makes this season so special.

You don’t need to be “on.”

You don’t need your house to look like a magazine spread.

You don’t need your baby on a perfect schedule.

That said, there are a few simple things that can help your home photograph beautifully during your newborn photoshoot.

  • A little cleaning in the rooms we’ll be using helps keep the focus on your family.
  • But it doesn’t mean deep cleaning, moving every toy, or pretending this isn’t real life.
  • Leave the signs that a newborn lives here. Leave the little details that make this season uniquely yours. The lived-in stuff that makes this season yours.
  • Before your session, do a quick sweep of the space and remove anything you wouldn’t want in the background of your photos like laundry piles, diaper pail, or the breakfast bowl still sitting on the side table.

You don’t need perfection; you just need a little readiness.

Once we arrive, we’ll find the best light in your home, guide you every step of the way, and help you settle into moments that feel natural and genuine. We’ll make something beautiful out of the home you’ve already prepared.

Your baby runs the show during your newborn photoshoot

One of the most important things to know about your newborn session is that your baby sets the pace. They are slow, flexible, and completely baby-led.

We pause for feeding, burping, diaper changes, cuddling… and all the little things your baby needs in the moment.

If your baby cries, that doesn’t mean the session isn’t going well.

It just means they’re communicating. We adjust; we breathe; we go at their pace.

In fact, some of the most meaningful moments happen in between the moments parents think we’re looking for. The way your baby settles into your chest after a feeding. The way their tiny fingers wrap around yours. The way you instinctively sway, comfort, and love them without even realizing it.

Those quiet, in-between moments are often what make newborn photography so special.

They’re the moments you’ll want to remember years from now. And those are exactly the moments we’re here to preserve.

Crying, Wiggling, Chaos… These Are Normal

I promise you: nothing your baby or older kids does will ever surprise us.

Babies cry. Toddlers run away and decide they don’t want to participate. Siblings get jealous. Someone forgets where they put the pacifier. Someone spits up on the one outfit you really wanted. Every family has their version of a sweet mess during an in-home newborn session, and somehow, the photos still turn out beautiful. Sometimes even more beautiful because they’re real.

The moments that feel imperfect while you’re living them are often the moments you’ll treasure most later. The laughter after a toddler runs out of the room. The way everyone gathers around to soothe a fussy baby. The little glimpses of love and connection that can’t be planned or posed.

Showing your connection in photos has always been the goal.. And when you look back at these photos years from now, that’s what you’ll remember most.

Your Postpartum body doesn’t need to be hidden

This one feels tender, but it’s important.

You just grew an entire human being.

Your body is healing & shifting. You’re not supposed to “bounce back” right away. You’re supposed to be here: loving, holding, breathing through it all, one day at the time.

We’re not photographing your size; we’re photographing your love.

We’ll guide you into flattering, natural poses that feel comfortable and genuine.

And one day, your baby will look back at these photos and think,

“That’s my mom. She loved me so much.”

Not one thought about your body… just you & how much you loved them.

Simple outfits are always best for newborn pictures

Mama, if you’re stressing about what everyone should wear, let me gently take that weight off your shoulders.

When it comes to your newborn photos, simple is almost always best.

Soft, neutral colors.

Comfortable pieces.

Bare feet if you’d like.

Cozy swaddles, timeless onesies, and textures that feel warm and inviting.

You don’t need perfectly styled outfits or to buy new outfits for everyone. The goal is to create newborn pictures that feel like your family and this season of life.

And if choosing outfits feels overwhelming right now, I completely understand. You have enough on your plate. For families who book with me or Brittany, you’ll have access to the TBP Client Closet. I’ve carefully chosen pieces for moms that are flattering, as well as newborn, baby, and kids options that perfectly complement mom’s outfit; not to mention photograph beautifully.

We’re here to capture this season… exactly as it is

Mama, these first few weeks are a blur. They’re raw and emotional and unbelievably precious all at once. You may feel exhausted. You may feel unsure. Some days, you may feel like you’re simply trying to make it to bedtime.

But even in the middle of all that, there’s a softness to this season that deserves to be remembered exactly as it is.

The tiny fingers.

The sleepy stretches.

The little noises they make while resting on your chest.

The way they curl into you like you’re their entire world.

Because right now, you are. And doing this in your home adds a kind of magic that simply can’t be recreated anywhere else. This is where you’re rocking them at 2 a.m. Where you’re changing diapers half-asleep. Where you’re pulling them close on the couch and memorizing every little feature. Where you’re whispering to them in the quiet moments and wondering how someone so small could take up so much space in your heart.

Your home holds the beginning of their story. The late nights. The slow mornings. The routines only the two of you understand. And that’s what makes these photographs so meaningful.

Mama, remember this:

The things that feel ordinary today will one day become the things you miss the most. Years from now, these images will bring you right back to this chapter.

The softness.

The sweetness.

The feeling of having your baby in your arms.

Even the moments you’re convinced you’ll never forget.

Because somehow, time always moves faster than we think. And years from now, these photographs won’t just be beautiful.

They’ll be priceless.

Most importantly, you’re doing a great job!

Really.
You are.

Newborn life asks a lot from everyone: you, dad, and even big siblings learning their new role. It’s overwhelming and beautiful all at once, and you’re navigating it the best way you know how.

Your newborn photos are simply a celebration of your baby and the family that’s welcoming them with so much love.

Your kids don’t have to act perfect.
Everyone can just be who they are that day.

You be with your people; we’ll guide everything else: the light, the flow, the natural moments that make your family yours.

You can breathe.
We’ve got you.
All of you.
