Winter traditions you need to start with your family

Family-Friendly Winter Traditions

Cold weather sometimes gets a bad reputation when it comes to fun activities. However, there is still plenty of fun to be had with your family during the winter months! Every season is a new opportunity to enjoy what nature has to offer. Winter is a time of year to rest, cozy up and embrace time well spent with your loved ones. Here are some winter traditions to start with your family this year:

1. Get Crafty

Winter is the perfect season for learning a new crafting skill. Want to crochet a blanket? Start an embroidery project to give to a friend? Learn how to watercolor paint? Make craft night a new family winter tradition! With more time spent indoors, it’s a great idea to find activities that require little to no screen time. Crafts are a great way to pass the time, work with your hands, and make something special for your loved ones. Last year, my family and I made tie dye t-shirts. Everybody got to choose the colors and design they wanted to do. Even my 3-year-old son joined the activity and it was so much fun. The tie dye t-shirt that we made is R’s favorite shirt. He wears it every week; he takes it out of his closet as soon as he sees that I have finished washing it.

2. Get Creative In The Kitchen

Start a winter tradition with your family by getting creative in the kitchen! Try a new recipe every Friday night or reserve a day of the week for baking. Winter is the perfect time of year to try new cookie recipes to share with loved ones during the holidays! An added bonus is that your kiddos are far more likely to try new foods that they helped prepare in the kitchen. We LOVE baking sugar cookies and decorating them while listening to Christmas music during the holidays. The kids always look forward to this activity.

3. Read More Books

Cozy up by the fire with a good book each night before your family goes to bed. You can take turns selecting a book and read a chapter aloud every night. Make everyone a cup of hot cocoa to enjoy while you read! There are so many great benefits to reading aloud with your kids no matter what their ages are. This is the perfect winter family tradition to brighten up those dark and cold nights.

4. Learn A New Skill

Another fun winter family tradition is to learn a new skill together as a family.  Do you want to play the piano? Practice more yoga? Learn how to sew, make handmade soap or candles? Learn something new together and spend some quality time with your loved ones in the winter time.

5. Have Fun In The Snow

If you’re only going to do 1 winter tradition from this list, this is what I would recommend 10000%. Every snowstorm that we have, my family and I would go out and play as a family. We would walk over to the nearest hill and spend most of our time sledding. We’ve also played snow ball fights and have made snow angels. We’ve also tried just rolling over the hill. We spend hours as a family playing in the snow. When we go inside, the kids would have a warm bubble bath. Then after that, we would enjoy popcorn and hot chocolate while watching a movie.

6. Book A Family Lifestyle Photography Session

Winter may not seem like a great time of year for family photos, but it’s the perfect season for a lifestyle session! Start a new winter family tradition by updating your annual family photos with an in-home lifestyle session. Home is a special place and seeing how much your family and your home changes from year to year will warm your heart in the winter season! If you’re looking for a family photographer in Northern Virginia, you’re at the right place. My team and I specialize in documenting milestones for families. I’d love to hear from you.

The weather outside may be frightful but creating new winter family traditions with your family can make this time of year so delightful! Winter time doesn’t have to be boring and you don’t have to spend more time in front of a screen to pass the time more quickly. I hope your family enjoys these new traditions together!
